Locks that survive the salt.

Salt air does the damage in Fort Myers. It works into the pin stack of an exterior cylinder long before anything looks wrong from the outside. We work mobile across Fort Myers — lockouts, rekeys, car keys and commercial hardware, at the door.

// FORT MYERS

Locks in Fort Myers: what actually goes wrong.

In the four designated historic districts the door itself is regulated: city design guidelines require replacement doors to match the original configuration and prohibit vinyl, while allowing metal doors of matching configuration. Dean Park's stock is 1916 to mid-1920s Craftsman bungalow, Spanish, Mediterranean, Tudor and Colonial Revival construction, which means original mortise-prepped doors and non-standard backsets rather than modern 2-3/8 inch bored preps. Census 2000 recorded Fort Myers housing as 5.3% built 1939 or earlier, 14.9% in 1940-1959, 21.1% in the 1960s, 21.5% in the 1970s and 23.0% in the 1980s. Near the water, standard plated cylinders corrode from the inside out; solid brass or marine-grade hardware lasts several times longer for a small difference in price. That standing moisture plus chloride from the Caloosahatchee and Gulf corrodes cylinder pins, springs, latch bolts, strike screws and the contacts in electronic access hardware - FEMA documents salt-accelerated corrosion of metal hardware within 300 to 3,000 feet of shore and measurable 5 to 10 miles inland, and ANSI/BHMA A156.18 tests hardware finishes by salt spray with corrosion, staining and blistering as failure criteria. The city has four designated historic districts - Edison Park (1995), Dean Park (1997), Downtown (1998) and Seminole Park (1998) - and Dean Park's roughly 80 homes were built between 1916 and the mid-1920s in Craftsman bungalow, Spanish, Mediterranean, English Tudor and Colonial Revival styles. The city's design guidelines require replacement doors to match the original configuration, accept metal doors where the configuration matches, and prohibit vinyl. Hurricane Ian also left a countywide repair backlog: 24,585 damaged residential structures and 5,076 homes destroyed in Lee County.

// QUESTIONS

Fort Myers — straight answers.

Is a locksmith licence required in Fort Myers?
Florida has no statewide locksmith license: locksmithing does not appear on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation list of services requiring a DBPR license, and HB 1311 (2025) was filed to create locksmith regulation, which confirms none exists in statute. Lee County contractor licensing registers state licenses and verifies insurance, and Ordinance 23-09 eliminated numerous local licensing categories; neither source lists a locksmith category. The City of Fort Myers requires a business tax receipt before operating and requires permits to alter or repair structures.
What sort of vehicles do you cut keys for around Fort Myers?
Florida's best-selling new vehicles in the most recent 45-day period tracked by CarEdge are the Toyota Camry, Corolla, Tacoma and RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota Corolla Cross and Kia Sportage, with Toyota taking five of the top ten; all of these use transponder or proximity keys, so most non-emergency key work is programming rather than mechanical cutting. passenger-car fleet averaged about 14 years old in 2024, so older mechanically keyed and early-transponder vehicles remain in service. In practice that means most of what we meet is a well-used daily driver rather than a brand-new car, so we carry blanks and software for older immobiliser systems as well as current ones.
What actually drives locksmith pricing in Fort Myers?
No locksmith license fee applies in Florida or Lee County, but a city business tax receipt is required to operate and permits are required for alteration or repair work. Historic-district jobs cost more in labor because guidelines require matching the original door configuration and prohibit vinyl replacements.
Why do my exterior locks seize so quickly here?
Salt-laden air near the water in Fort Myers corrodes the pins and springs inside the cylinder. A lock that grinds or needs jiggling is usually months away from failing outright. Marine-grade or solid-brass cylinders hold up far better.
Can you service an original mortise lock instead of replacing it?
Usually yes. A period mortise lock can normally be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rehung, which keeps the door original and costs less than cutting the jamb for a modern lockset.
Do you work on impact-rated and multipoint doors?
Yes. Multipoint mechanisms on impact doors go out of alignment as the frame settles. Most are adjustable — replacing the whole door slab is rarely necessary.
Can you make a car key in Fort Myers with no original?
Yes. If every key is lost we originate a new one from the vehicle, cut it, and program it to the immobiliser on site — no dealer tow and no waiting on a part order.
Will you drill my lock?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry is the default and we carry the picks, bypass tools and decoders for it. Drilling is a last resort on a dead cylinder, and you hear about it before it happens.
Which parts of Fort Myers do you cover?
All of it, including Dean Park, Downtown Historic, Edison Park, Seminole Park, McGregor Estates, Edgewood and the surrounding area.
No dealer tow. No multi-day wait. Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.

// BEFORE WE OPEN ANYTHING

Proof of ownership.

Before we open anything or change any lock, we have to establish that the property or vehicle is yours. This is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the reason nobody can call us and have your locks changed either.

Photo ID, matching the property or vehicle
Government-issued ID plus a document tying you to the address or the VIN — deed, title, registration, lease, utility bill or similar.
You must be there in person
We cannot open a property or change locks for someone who is out of state, out of the country, or sending a friend, a relative or a contractor on their behalf. No exceptions, however reasonable the request sounds.
Tenanted property — we cannot let you in
If the property is rented and the tenant is in possession, an owner cannot have us open it or change the locks. That is a matter for the courts, not a locksmith.
Evictions — the Sheriff must be on site
We carry out lock changes on an eviction only with the Sheriff physically present and the court paperwork in hand. We do not attend evictions on a landlord’s word alone.
The same rule applies to vehicles
Car lockouts and key work require ID and proof the vehicle is yours — title, registration or equivalent. A key in your hand is not proof.
Commercial premises
Business lockouts require proof of ownership or documented authority to act for the business.
We may ask for documents before we dispatch
If anything about a request does not sit right, we will ask you to send ID and proof of ownership over the phone, before a technician leaves. If you are not willing to provide it up front, we will not attend. That is not suspicion of you personally — it is the same check that keeps anyone from doing this to your property.

If you cannot produce it, we will not open it — and we will still charge for the call-out, because our technician still traveled. Bring the documents and it is a two-minute conversation.
