Locks that survive the salt.

Salt air does the damage in Orlando. It works into the pin stack of an exterior cylinder long before anything looks wrong from the outside. We work mobile across Orlando — lockouts, rekeys, car keys and commercial hardware, at the door.

// ORLANDO

Locks in Orlando: what actually goes wrong.

Orlando's housing is young by Florida standards - a 1995 median year built and 43.4% of units built since 2000 - so the local lock population skews toward builder-grade standard-bore hardware and, in newer subdivisions and rental communities, electronic and keypad locks rather than the pre-war mortise work that dominates Tampa's or Jacksonville's older districts. Being inland, salt corrosion is not the driver here; summer thunderstorm and lightning activity affecting powered access hardware is. ACS 2024 1-year data give Orlando a median year built of 1995, with 43.4% of units built in 2000 or later and only 13.6% built before 1960. Near the water, standard plated cylinders corrode from the inside out; solid brass or marine-grade hardware lasts several times longer for a small difference in price. The city is inland, roughly at the center of the peninsula, so it sits outside FDOT's half-mile "Extremely Aggressive" chloride band that governs coastal hardware corrosion; the dominant hardware stressors here are heat, humidity and thunderstorm activity rather than salt. NWS lightning climatology documents the peninsula's summer maximum in cloud-to-ground flash density, which is the practical risk for powered access control, gate operators and smart locks in Central Florida. Single-family detached units are 32.1% of the stock, with 8.5% attached. The pre-war minority is concentrated in the city's six historic preservation overlay districts: Lake Eola Heights (Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Mediterranean Revival, Mission Revival 1905-1925, Art Deco 1920s, Minimal Traditional, frame vernacular) and Lake Lawsona (bungalows and Craftsman "from 1911 to the 1950s"), so most of the city's doors are late-20th-century standard-bore units and the historic exceptions are geographically contained.

// QUESTIONS

Orlando — straight answers.

Is a locksmith licence required in Orlando?
Florida has no statewide locksmith license: locksmithing is not a licensed profession under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and s. expressly preempts the licensing of occupations to the state, allowing only local licensing imposed before January 1, 2021, which the statute states "expires on July 1, 2024". No Orange County or City of Orlando locksmith licensing program was identified in this session; the two Florida county locksmith ordinances located were Miami-Dade's and Hillsborough's, both predating the preemption, and Broward's, which was repealed in practice after HB 735.
How does Florida regulate locksmiths?
A local business tax receipt is still required to operate a business: "You must pay a tax to operate any business within city limits. A business tax receipt is proof of payment and it is required before a business opens"Ch.
What sort of vehicles do you cut keys for around Orlando?
Orange County had 1,194,341 registered autos and pickups in the March 3, 2024 FLHSMV report. In practice that means most of what we meet is a well-used daily driver rather than a brand-new car, so we carry blanks and software for older immobiliser systems as well as current ones.
What actually drives locksmith pricing in Orlando?
There is no state locksmith license and no identified local locksmith license, so the compliance cost is the City of Orlando business tax receipt and certificate of use. Absence of the coastal corrosion factor that shortens hardware life in Miami and Fort Lauderdale means fewer corrosion-driven replacements.
Why do my exterior locks seize so quickly here?
Salt-laden air near the water in Orlando corrodes the pins and springs inside the cylinder. A lock that grinds or needs jiggling is usually months away from failing outright. Marine-grade or solid-brass cylinders hold up far better.
Can you service an original mortise lock instead of replacing it?
Usually yes. A period mortise lock can normally be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rehung, which keeps the door original and costs less than cutting the jamb for a modern lockset.
Do you work on impact-rated and multipoint doors?
Yes. Multipoint mechanisms on impact doors go out of alignment as the frame settles. Most are adjustable — replacing the whole door slab is rarely necessary.
Can you make a car key in Orlando with no original?
Yes. If every key is lost we originate a new one from the vehicle, cut it, and program it to the immobiliser on site — no dealer tow and no waiting on a part order.
Will you drill my lock?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry is the default and we carry the picks, bypass tools and decoders for it. Drilling is a last resort on a dead cylinder, and you hear about it before it happens.
Which parts of Orlando do you cover?
All of it, including College Park, Audubon Park, Baldwin Park, Lake Eola Heights, Thornton Park, Delaney Park and the surrounding area.
No dealer tow. No multi-day wait. Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.

// BEFORE WE OPEN ANYTHING

Proof of ownership.

Before we open anything or change any lock, we have to establish that the property or vehicle is yours. This is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the reason nobody can call us and have your locks changed either.

Photo ID, matching the property or vehicle
Government-issued ID plus a document tying you to the address or the VIN — deed, title, registration, lease, utility bill or similar.
You must be there in person
We cannot open a property or change locks for someone who is out of state, out of the country, or sending a friend, a relative or a contractor on their behalf. No exceptions, however reasonable the request sounds.
Tenanted property — we cannot let you in
If the property is rented and the tenant is in possession, an owner cannot have us open it or change the locks. That is a matter for the courts, not a locksmith.
Evictions — the Sheriff must be on site
We carry out lock changes on an eviction only with the Sheriff physically present and the court paperwork in hand. We do not attend evictions on a landlord’s word alone.
The same rule applies to vehicles
Car lockouts and key work require ID and proof the vehicle is yours — title, registration or equivalent. A key in your hand is not proof.
Commercial premises
Business lockouts require proof of ownership or documented authority to act for the business.
We may ask for documents before we dispatch
If anything about a request does not sit right, we will ask you to send ID and proof of ownership over the phone, before a technician leaves. If you are not willing to provide it up front, we will not attend. That is not suspicion of you personally — it is the same check that keeps anyone from doing this to your property.

If you cannot produce it, we will not open it — and we will still charge for the call-out, because our technician still traveled. Bring the documents and it is a two-minute conversation.
