Locks that survive the salt.

Salt air does the damage in Ocala. It works into the pin stack of an exterior cylinder long before anything looks wrong from the outside. We work mobile across Ocala — lockouts, rekeys, car keys and commercial hardware, at the door.

// OCALA

Locks in Ocala: what actually goes wrong.

The historic core is old enough that hardware is genuinely period: the Ocala Historic District's documented houses date from roughly 1906 to the 1930s across Queen Anne, Classic, Mediterranean, Colonial and Tudor Revival styles, so mortise locks and original door prep are common in the Ocala and Tuscawilla Park districts. Those two districts are locally designated, and a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Ocala Historic Preservation Advisory Board is required before exterior work - explicitly including "changes to windows, doors... Ocala rebuilt after the Thanksgiving Day 1883 fire in brick, granite and steel rather than lumber and was known statewide as the "Brick City" by 1888; its four historic districts contain 529 surveyed buildings (Ocala 308, surveyed 1981; Tuscawilla 56, 1986; Downtown Commercial 35, 1997; West Ocala 130, 2001). Near the water, standard plated cylinders corrode from the inside out; solid brass or marine-grade hardware lasts several times longer for a small difference in price. Winter cold is genuine for Florida: annual mean minimum 24.7 F and an all-time record low of 11 F, and the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 ended the area's citrus economy. Documented styles in the Ocala Historic District are turn-of-century and boom-era: Queen Anne Revival (c.1907-1912), Classic Revival (c.1906-1912), Romanesque, Georgian Revival (by 1912), American Bungalow, Mediterranean Revival (c.1912-1930), Colonial Revival (c.1926), Tudor Revival (by 1918-1938) and Carpenter Gothic. Outside those districts the stock is mostly later: city housing units went from 21,255 (1990) to 26,339 (2010), with 15,512 single-family and 1,245 mobile-home units in ACS 2016-2020, while surrounding Marion County held 33,430 mobile homes. entranceways" - which turns a visible exterior hardware change on those addresses into a review matter rather than a same-day swap.

// QUESTIONS

Ocala — straight answers.

Is a locksmith licence required in Ocala?
Florida has no statewide locksmith licence: locksmiths do not appear in Ch. 489 contractor definitions (F.S. 489.105) and are not among the businesses listed as licensed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
How does Florida regulate locksmiths?
HB 1311 (2025), which would have required DACS licensure of locksmith services businesses, died in the Industries & Professional Activities Subcommittee on 06/16/2025, so no state licence exists. DBPR states: "You should also check with your county or city to learn whether or not a local business tax receipt or certificate of competency is required for services that do not require a state license." For Ocala, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners repealed the county Occupational License Ordinance effective October 1, 2006, so no county occupational licence/business tax receipt is required; the Tax Collector notes this "does not affect... Occupational License requirements for cities located in Marion County," and directs City of Ocala contractors and subcontractors to the City Building Department at the relevant department.
What sort of vehicles do you cut keys for around Ocala?
Statewide new-vehicle sales data for Florida (updated August 4, 2026) show Toyota holding 5 of the 10 best-selling models, led by the 2026 Camry at 7,006 units in 45 days, with Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Kia Sportage also in the top 10. Ocala-specific note: 11.25% of occupied city housing units had no vehicle available in ACS 2016-2020, materially higher than Marion County's 4.78%. In practice that means most of what we meet is a well-used daily driver rather than a brand-new car, so we carry blanks and software for older immobiliser systems as well as current ones.
What actually drives locksmith pricing in Ocala?
Downward pressure: no Marion County occupational licence requirement since October 2006 and no state locksmith licence, so entry costs are low. Upward pressure: Certificate of Appropriateness review for exterior door/hardware changes in the locally designated Ocala and Tuscawilla Park historic districts, and the county's high mobile-home count (33,430 units in Marion County, ACS 2016-2020) which involves non-standard door and lock hardware.
Why do my exterior locks seize so quickly here?
Salt-laden air near the water in Ocala corrodes the pins and springs inside the cylinder. A lock that grinds or needs jiggling is usually months away from failing outright. Marine-grade or solid-brass cylinders hold up far better.
Can you service an original mortise lock instead of replacing it?
Usually yes. A period mortise lock can normally be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rehung, which keeps the door original and costs less than cutting the jamb for a modern lockset.
Can you make a car key in Ocala with no original?
Yes. If every key is lost we originate a new one from the vehicle, cut it, and program it to the immobiliser on site — no dealer tow and no waiting on a part order.
Will you drill my lock?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry is the default and we carry the picks, bypass tools and decoders for it. Drilling is a last resort on a dead cylinder, and you hear about it before it happens.
Which parts of Ocala do you cover?
All of it, including Ocala Historic District, Tuscawilla Park Historic District, Downtown Commercial Historic District, West Ocala, Southeast Ocala, Woodfields and the surrounding area.
No dealer tow. No multi-day wait. Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.

// BEFORE WE OPEN ANYTHING

Proof of ownership.

Before we open anything or change any lock, we have to establish that the property or vehicle is yours. This is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the reason nobody can call us and have your locks changed either.

Photo ID, matching the property or vehicle
Government-issued ID plus a document tying you to the address or the VIN — deed, title, registration, lease, utility bill or similar.
You must be there in person
We cannot open a property or change locks for someone who is out of state, out of the country, or sending a friend, a relative or a contractor on their behalf. No exceptions, however reasonable the request sounds.
Tenanted property — we cannot let you in
If the property is rented and the tenant is in possession, an owner cannot have us open it or change the locks. That is a matter for the courts, not a locksmith.
Evictions — the Sheriff must be on site
We carry out lock changes on an eviction only with the Sheriff physically present and the court paperwork in hand. We do not attend evictions on a landlord’s word alone.
The same rule applies to vehicles
Car lockouts and key work require ID and proof the vehicle is yours — title, registration or equivalent. A key in your hand is not proof.
Commercial premises
Business lockouts require proof of ownership or documented authority to act for the business.
We may ask for documents before we dispatch
If anything about a request does not sit right, we will ask you to send ID and proof of ownership over the phone, before a technician leaves. If you are not willing to provide it up front, we will not attend. That is not suspicion of you personally — it is the same check that keeps anyone from doing this to your property.

If you cannot produce it, we will not open it — and we will still charge for the call-out, because our technician still traveled. Bring the documents and it is a two-minute conversation.
