Locks that survive the salt.

Salt air does the damage in Jacksonville. It works into the pin stack of an exterior cylinder long before anything looks wrong from the outside. About 53.40 inches of rain a year keeps exterior cylinders damp for months at a stretch. We work mobile across Jacksonville — lockouts, rekeys, car keys and commercial hardware, at the door.

Locks in Jacksonville: what actually goes wrong.

Jacksonville consolidated city and county government, so business compliance runs through a single Duval County local business tax receipt rather than layered city and county filings, with separate city licenses only in Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Baldwin. Physically the city splits into two hardware environments: the beaches and Intracoastal edge inside FDOT's half-mile extremely-aggressive chloride band and a large inland area where corrosion is a minor factor, which is why finish specification matters here in a way it does not in a uniformly inland city. ACS 2024 1-year data give Jacksonville a median year built of 1990, with 58.7% of housing units single-family detached - the highest detached share of the five cities in this batch - and 37.9% of units built in 2000 or later. Near the water, standard plated cylinders corrode from the inside out; solid brass or marine-grade hardware lasts several times longer for a small difference in price. Unlike the South Florida cities, Jacksonville records about 10 to 15 nights at or below freezing per year, so exterior hardware here cycles between humid heat and occasional freezing conditions. Oceanfront and Intracoastal parts of Duval County fall inside FDOT's "Extremely Aggressive" corrosion classification for locations within a half mile of high-chloride water, while most of the city's inland area does not; Schlage's coastal guidance for such areas is a specific finish list rather than a marine-rated lock. About 16.5% of units predate 1960, concentrated in the Riverside (roughly 1871-1935) and Avondale (1909-1936) historic districts, whose city preservation guidelines identify Bungalow, Prairie School, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Queen Anne, Mediterranean Revival, frame vernacular (1880-1930) and masonry vernacular (1900-1940) forms. Those pre-1940 doors commonly carry original mortise hardware and non-standard prep.

// QUESTIONS

Jacksonville — straight answers.

Is a locksmith licence required in Jacksonville?
Florida has no statewide locksmith license: locksmithing is not a licensed profession under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and s. expressly preempts the licensing of occupations to the state, allowing only local licensing imposed before January 1, 2021, which the statute states "expires on July 1, 2024". No Duval County or City of Jacksonville locksmith licensing program was identified in this session; the only Florida county locksmith ordinances located were in Miami-Dade and Hillsborough (both pre-2021 and therefore inside the s.
How does Florida regulate locksmiths?
163.211 sunset) and Broward, which was withdrawn after HB 735. A local business tax receipt is still required to operate a business: "If you own or operate a business in Jacksonville/Duval County, you must obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt (known as an Occupational License prior to 2007)"Ch.
What sort of vehicles do you cut keys for around Jacksonville?
Duval County had 696,156 registered autos and pickups in the FLHSMV report dated March 3, 2024. In practice that means most of what we meet is a well-used daily driver rather than a brand-new car, so we carry blanks and software for older immobiliser systems as well as current ones.
What actually drives locksmith pricing in Jacksonville?
No state or local locksmith license fee applies, leaving the Duval County local business tax receipt as the main compliance cost. Jacksonville's land area and the 58.7% detached-home share spread jobs over long drive distances, and the coastal-versus-inland split affects part selection.
Why do my exterior locks seize so quickly here?
Salt-laden air near the water in Jacksonville corrodes the pins and springs inside the cylinder. A lock that grinds or needs jiggling is usually months away from failing outright. Marine-grade or solid-brass cylinders hold up far better.
Can you service an original mortise lock instead of replacing it?
Usually yes. A period mortise lock can normally be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rehung, which keeps the door original and costs less than cutting the jamb for a modern lockset.
Can you make a car key in Jacksonville with no original?
Yes. If every key is lost we originate a new one from the vehicle, cut it, and program it to the immobiliser on site — no dealer tow and no waiting on a part order.
Will you drill my lock?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry is the default and we carry the picks, bypass tools and decoders for it. Drilling is a last resort on a dead cylinder, and you hear about it before it happens.
Which parts of Jacksonville do you cover?
All of it, including Riverside, Avondale, Springfield, San Marco, Ortega, Murray Hill and the surrounding area.
No dealer tow. No multi-day wait. Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.

// BEFORE WE OPEN ANYTHING

Proof of ownership.

Before we open anything or change any lock, we have to establish that the property or vehicle is yours. This is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the reason nobody can call us and have your locks changed either.

Photo ID, matching the property or vehicle
Government-issued ID plus a document tying you to the address or the VIN — deed, title, registration, lease, utility bill or similar.
You must be there in person
We cannot open a property or change locks for someone who is out of state, out of the country, or sending a friend, a relative or a contractor on their behalf. No exceptions, however reasonable the request sounds.
Tenanted property — we cannot let you in
If the property is rented and the tenant is in possession, an owner cannot have us open it or change the locks. That is a matter for the courts, not a locksmith.
Evictions — the Sheriff must be on site
We carry out lock changes on an eviction only with the Sheriff physically present and the court paperwork in hand. We do not attend evictions on a landlord’s word alone.
The same rule applies to vehicles
Car lockouts and key work require ID and proof the vehicle is yours — title, registration or equivalent. A key in your hand is not proof.
Commercial premises
Business lockouts require proof of ownership or documented authority to act for the business.
We may ask for documents before we dispatch
If anything about a request does not sit right, we will ask you to send ID and proof of ownership over the phone, before a technician leaves. If you are not willing to provide it up front, we will not attend. That is not suspicion of you personally — it is the same check that keeps anyone from doing this to your property.

If you cannot produce it, we will not open it — and we will still charge for the call-out, because our technician still traveled. Bring the documents and it is a two-minute conversation.
