TUCSON, AZ · KEYS PROGRAMMED ON SITE

New car keys cut and coded in the Old Pueblo, wherever you are parked.

Tucson runs an older fleet than the Valley does, and older cars fail in older ways. Between the university's hand-me-down sedans and the trucks working the aerospace corridor, most of what we see here is a worn lock or a tired chip rather than a brand-new smart key. We come to the vehicle either way.

What Tucson Weather and Traffic Do to Keys

Tucson sits high enough in the Sonoran basin that nights cool off hard, and that daily swing is rough on the plastics and seals in a car door. Weatherstrip dries and splits through the arid spring, then the July monsoon arrives as a wall of water rather than drizzle. The first heavy cell of the season pushes rain past those tired seals into the driver's door, straight down onto the lock actuator, latch wiring and door module. A week later the remote unlock stops answering and the owner assumes the fob died. The university fleet is the other half of the picture. Students arrive with inherited sedans and first cars, largely chipped-key vehicles from the era before proximity systems, parked along Speedway, in the Main Gate garages and up and down the side streets of Sam Hughes. Those keys have been on the same ring as house keys and gym keys for a decade, and the head cracks around the transponder until the chip sits loose and only reads on certain days. Out in Rita Ranch and Vail the drive to any dealer is long enough that the whole point is having the work done in the driveway.

// QUESTIONS

Tucson — straight answers.

My remote stopped working right after a monsoon storm. What happened?
Check the door before you condemn the remote. Tucson weatherstrip dries out over the long rainless stretch, and a hard monsoon cell drives water through the gap onto the actuator and door harness. When that circuit is wet or corroded the lock will not respond no matter how good the key is. A technician tests the door side first.
I am a student and the car is titled to my parents out of state. Can you still help?
We need documentation linking the vehicle to its registered owner and identification from whoever is present. Where the titleholder lives elsewhere, that is commonly handled with the registration plus the owner reachable to confirm. Bring what you have when you call so nobody wastes a trip to the Main Gate garage.
The key only starts the car sometimes. Is the ignition going out?
On older Tucson vehicles the more common cause is a split key head. The transponder chip is glued into that plastic, and years of riding a crowded keyring cracks it so the chip shifts out of range of the antenna ring. It reads on some tries and not others. Rebuilding the key onto a fresh housing usually ends it.
Do you go out to Marana, Vail and Oro Valley?
Yes, and those are exactly the calls where mobile service earns its keep, because the round trip to a dealership from the edges of Pima County eats an entire afternoon. Give us the address or the nearest mile marker and a technician is routed to the vehicle where it stopped.
Can you make a key for an older truck with no chip at all?
Yes. Plenty of pre-immobiliser pickups are still working around Tucson, and those keys are mechanical, cut to the lock rather than coded to a computer. If the cylinder has been worn round by twenty years of use, we will tell you that before making a key that will not solve the actual problem.
No dealer tow. No multi-day wait. Keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.
